If you've been following my writings on my old blog you will not at all be surprised to see me writing about another Swedish band. This time it is Icona Pop.
They only came to my attention after being featured on the Kitsuné compilation with their track 'Manners.'
Manners (Extended) by IconaPop
Icona Pop are Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo, DJ's, artists and now band members.
'Manners' is very much a girl-power song. Not least because of the defiantly delivered vocals, but also the lyrical content and the heavy percussive influence really drives it home.
They also have another track floating around the Interwebs. 'Still Don't Know' is another track of pure pop fun in a similar vein to 'Manners.'

I, for one, hope to see more from them this year and am hopeful that the photo used on their website is in fact an album cover.

Having not seen it yet and been given a synopsis, I feel it would be ludicrous not to use that to describe the film. So, here it is:

Y'all may already have heard of TEETH, I mean, 'See Spaces' was pretty hard to miss. Not least because it's absolutely aces and also because there were approximately 32,594 remixes released, and that's being conservative.
Recently, they've been cooking up some phat beatz in the studio for their new album and have released a demo version of their track 'U-R-1,' which you can listen to right here.
They've also put the tracks from their first tape up on the web. A little rough around the edges, but it's pretty frenetic stuff and sounds good for busting moves. Reminds me a little of Heartsrevolution, but they're still very different.

Lady Lazarus
Where have I been lately? Despite my moral obligation to stuff my face full of food and get lots of cool stuff in the name of the birth of our Lord and Saviour, I should still be on here more often.
Well, much like Lazarus, who was himself apparently brought back from the dead by that very same Lord and Saviour, I am back, and I do intend to be back for good.
Today's post is about Lady Lazarus. Currently based in Savannah, Georgia, this lady is quite the creative powerhouse. Melissa Ann Sweat is a poet, writer, almost-journalist, almost-film student at Werner Herzog’s Rogue School, and fine artist originally from San Jose, Calif.
Crafting beautifully minimal and atmospheric songs that get almost get by solely with a piano and a barely there voice which create a wonderfully dreamy atmosphere that you could just get lost in forever.

My Best Albums of 2010
Initially, I was pretty reluctant to do a 'best of' list since it would be filled entirely with stuff that you've probably seen elsewhere. Unless of course you get all your hot music news from me. In which case, I feel I must tell you, you can do better. Honestly.
But then I thought, what the hell, let's do this!
In no particular order:
1. First Aid Kit - The Big Black And The Blue
What's not to like? The wonderful vocals, that are actually properly sung and not just spoken, over the top of the gentle guitars are just beautiful. I just want to sit on the floor cross legged in front of them sitting on stools, wearing big cable knit jumpers and have them sing to me.
2. Solar Bears - She Was Coloured In
An exceptional and atmospheric record, that is rewarding with every listen. Really feels like it could be used as a film score.
3. Delorean - Subiza
I think it is actually physically impossible to be unhappy when listening to this album. Equally good on the iPod, or for busting moves in da club. Actually, it's so fun it'll have you busting moves when it's on your iPod.
4. Foals - Total Life Forever
I'll leave it to Hot Chocolate to describe what I think of each of the tracks on this album:
5. Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles (II)
It was a toss up between this and Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, but in the end I felt it would be ridiculous to not include an album that has racked up so many listens, not that that was the sole criterion for these choices. Far from it. But, I'm a sucker for bangin music and I did really like it.
There you go, them's me top 5. Like I said, the decision process was not based on what I've listened to the most, which may be a bit ridiculous. But, the decisions make sense to me, although I am disappointed I didn't find room for Ariel Pink.
Silly me.
I hope these choices weren't too offensive, but feel free to (politely) stake your claim for your favourites. If indeed anyone is out there and reads this.

Dude Locker Christmas Album 2010
Today, I'm just going to point you in the direction of this, the Dude Locker Christmas Album 2010.
There is a real good mix of music on here. Hip-hop, metal, indie-folk and more in-between.
The Dude Locker is a DIY art space based in Columbus, Ohio. Those of you with exceptional memories will remember that this is also the home of Way Yes who were featured on here not much more than 3 weeks ago. And yes, they are on this album, providing an excellent Christmas version of 'Dreadlock Holiday.'
This is available on a 'name your price' basis, but remember that these guys aren't super-mega rich stars like Radiohead who can afford to give away their music for free. And, hey, it's Christmas dude.

NYE
New Years Eve is always a tricky night to plan and so much can just go wrong.
*Cough.*
But, this year can be different.
You should definitely head over to The Old Blue Last, a 300 year old pub/hub of coolness situated right in the heart of Coolville, London and run by connoisseurs of cool, VICE.
If that's not enough to convince you, I should also mention that The OBL has been officially named as the place to find the hottest girls in London.
Quite literally, just looking at the flyer is enough to make you want to go, and also wet yourself a little bit with excitement. Why not cast your eyes down and do just that and embrace the warmth running through your pants and down your leg, it's cheaper than central heating.

DaKOTA
The only thing I can say for certain about DaKOTA is that I really like them.
The only came to my attention today, after they were so kind as to follow me on twitter. I checked them out to see who they were and what they were about.
All that was there was a link to a page filled with videos to their tracks, which you should definitely check out.
The first track, 'Danger Jazz,' is a ten minute epic which sounded like it had come straight out of the Manhunter soundtrack with prominent drums blending nicely with the dreamy synths.
The track 'Performance One' is in a similar vein, but is much more aggressive.
DaKOTA also seem to incorporate some slowed down R'n'B and hip-hop into their music, but I wouldn't like to call it witch house because, apart from GR†LLGR†LL, it doesn't really impress me that much. Perhaps it's this 'nightbus' I've heard about on Vice Style.
No matter what type of music it is, it is definitely something I like. And also, their videos are pretty cool and definitely worth watching.

Death And Vanilla
I've been more than a little slack with you guys over the past week, and for that I offer my deepest and sincere apologies. For the past few days I've been watching Sylvester Stallone and Antonio Banderas do battle in a 90's action non-classic, although I never saw the end. The best bit of the film was when Julianne Moore's cat hid under the bed, giving me a few Nam-style flashbacks of trying to coerce my cats out from under the bed.
How is this relevant, you may be wondering. Well, it isn't I've only gone and done a Seinfeld and be about the trivialities of daily life, and perhaps tried to add some comedy. Although, the latter is very much up for discussion. But that implies that some people might find it funny, which I doubt, so in fact, there is no discussion. It's a shut book, cast iron, stone wall case of not being funny.
Thanks for making it this far, although I suspect many will have scrolled down to the music and thought, 'eff reading all this.'
Today I offer to you Death And Vanilla, not like how Abraham offered Isaac to God because I'm not a dick, but more like how a waiter may offer you a canapé at a fancy party. They are another Swedish export, hailing from Malmö.
The music that they make is slightly unsettling stuff. The barely there vocals make me think of some sort of ghostly nursery rhyme from a black and white film, which I know is quite a specific thing to be think of, but I don't know hoe better to explain it. The melodies also verge on the psychedelic and sound like what I imagine abandoned fairgrounds might play. The nearest comparison I can make with a current artist/band would have to be Husky Rescue, who also released a pretty good album earlier in the year.
Ridiculous similes and metaphors aside, it is very good stuff snd I would very much recommend adding it your music collection, either from Bandcamp or make yourself one of their favourite people in the world and buy it for a measly 6€ which also gets you lots more cool stuff to make the music experience way cooler.

True Womanhood
Washington, D.C. based music types True Womanhood have been busy boys and girls lately.
Firstly, they came to my attention with new track, 'Nite Prowlers,' which surfs the wave of the dubstep popularity, but also adds some of the elements of early 90's grunge and experimental and distorted rock.

What's even more impressive is that this track was composed 'by clanging pieces of metal around in a mile-long sewer tunnel + bass guitar, 808 drumz, and vocals- all run through a severely malfunctioning tape delay.' It's this sort of creativity and dedication to creation that makes me feel kinda useless, but knowing someone is out there doing it is a nice consolation.
Also, they have started a new project called 'Reel Too Real,' which you can read all about by following the link.

Seeing as how I got all political the other day, I though I better give this whole protest a song to go with it.
I know this song is, like, SO September, but it fits very nicely with what is going on and sums up pretty much how I, and many others, feel.
Lyrics for those, like me, who can never understand what singers are actually saying and who don't want to squint at the video:

Gil Scott-Heron and Jamie xx
If Rough Trade's Album of The Year List (RTAOTY) is anything to go by, this should be a match made in heaven.
The producer of last year's album of the year and member of the band who won said award, Jamie Smith, has teamed up with this years runner-up in the RTAOTY, Gil Scott-Heron, to provide a reworking of 13 tracks from I'm New Here for a new album We're New Here, which is set for a release on February 21st 2011.
Will it work?
Who knows? You can already listen to 'NY Is Killing Me' here or here.
Sounds very dubstep-y to me. I'm usually not a fan, but I quite like it because unlike a lot of dubstep I here, it's not too minimal. Having more than just a bass line and a clap sample, it provides an interesting listen, and when you add Gil Scott-Heron's unique vocal delivery, it gets even better.
You can take a risk and hope you like it and buy it now, or wait until the release. Although, I suspect the physical copies, especially vinyl, will be limited, so I'd bust a move over to the website and buy it.

This week they have enlisted the help of Jamie Reynolds, frontman of the band to have released one of the most disappointing albums of the year, but I'm sure he has weaved the magic he is capable of in this episode.
Am I the only one who thought Surfing The Void was a bit rubbish?
I can say this because Klaxons, quite rightly, couldn't give a sh*t about my worthless opinion.

VBS Films Student Riots
For those of you who are not in the UK and have no real need to keep up to date with UK news, these last few weeks students have been getting pretty angry about the rises in tuition fees.
As a student myself, I very much agree with those who are fighting against this proposed rise and it upsets me greatly to see other young people either not caring or openly criticising the protesters and finding them an embarrassment.
Obviously, violence is not how we would like to achieve our goals and greater unity and a more definitive stance is required, but to be perfectly honest, it makes me so fucking angry hearing that an entire generation who spent their whole youth fighting 'the system,' who benefited from free University education and who are responsible for this whole economic mess are condemning the behaviour of rioters, telling us we have to pay ridiculously high fees and telling us that we are going to have to pay to get the economy going again, while the rich carry on as good as unaffected.
Oh yeah, and when we do leave University, there are hardly any jobs thus making those 3 years and £27 000 in tuition fees a complete and total waste.
If you really want to organise effective action against this, why not refuse to sit your exams? Everyone from A-Level to final year students. Show them that we are actually not prepared to pay. After all, what is the point in protesting so vehemently against something, if after you lose you're still going to be a part of it?
As a student myself, I very much agree with those who are fighting against this proposed rise and it upsets me greatly to see other young people either not caring or openly criticising the protesters and finding them an embarrassment.

New Mexico
If you like good old fashioned rock and roll, then todays offering will be a treat.
New Mexico hail from Californ-I-A, famous for girls, a hotel and Jack Bauer.
New Mexico specialise in garage rock and occasionally remind a young 'un like me of early Kings Of Leon and a slightly more polished Tiger! Shit! Tiger! Tiger!. But, they are definitely distinct from those guys. They have a lot more 'edge,' whatever that actually means, than KoL and a much bigger sound than TSTT.
What is certain though, is that these guys are all about fast guitars that aim to get you off your seat and throwing your hands in the air like you just don't care.
The new EP is out now on iTunes and available on Bandcamp. They've also got some shows on in San Diego over the next few weeks.

Backstage Heroes
I literally have so much stuff to write for you guys that I have no choice but to crack out another post today because I thought I better do it while I'm still in the mood for givin' you some lovin'.
Check out Sam Kilcoyne, the man/boy who makes me feel kinda worthless and like I've wasted my life because at three years my junior, he has already started a music festival, is running club nights and is in a band. What am I doing? Eating biscuits in my room and writing something no one reads.
Who knows? Maybe someday I will have my own club night. Not likely, but I can always dream and as this young whippersnapper has shown me, it's possible.

Timbaland & Missy Elliot - Get Involved - Joe T Vanelli Remix
The title sums it up pretty nicely, really.
Not a whole lot extra to say. You know who Timbaland and Missy Elliot are, and I have it on good authority that Joe T Vanelli is an Italian House Music legend.
Here Joe T Vanelli gives us a slightly tech-y, house remix which works pretty well and adds more support to the theory that house music is back. (And it is back and it is better than dubstep, but that's another story).

Way Yes
I've had Way Yes sitting in my Internet letter box for a while now, and combining my laziness with my recent holiday they've sat there patiently waiting for me to listen to them and show them some love.
Well wait no more.
I finally got round to giving these a guys a spin, and they were definitely worth it! Hailing from Columbus, Ohio, Way Yes are Glenn Davis and Travis Hall. Immediately, they reminded me of Vampire Weekend. Indeed, if Vampire Weekend are going to make a slightly experimental third album, it would probably sound a lot like Herringbone.
The vocals may not always be conventional, but they still manage to fit into the afro-beat vibe that is running through the EP. Way Yes manage to combine many layers of sounds, that build throughout the tracks and none more so on closing track 'Color Blind.' When you add meaningful lyrics into the mix, you have a winning record and a band I am very much looking forward to seeing more of.
Herringbone is available to buy now on their Bandcamp page and sees a proper release on 14th December. If you also happen to be from Ohio or in Ohio in the next 2 months, you can catch them live on these dates:

Edit: If you have already read this you will notice a few changes in the tour dates. What was the 20th December date at Carabar was, unfortunately incorrect, and on the 20th November. Also, the date on the 16th December has now been cancelled.
